The J & B wedding celebration wrapped up on Sunday with a nice brunch hosted by the mother of the groom. Meh finally got an opportunity to catch up with folks she hadn't had much of a chance to see at the wedding. And Zachary was mostly happy through the brunch, particularly once we found him some (what else but) grapes and blueberries, though eventually the exhaustion did once again catch up with him. He slept much of the ride to the airport - which we incidentally grabbed a town car for. The difference in driving styles from herky-jerky cabbie to 'yes we do realize we have passengers' smooth-driving town car was well worth the like $5 fare difference. We were dreading the return flight, but did everything in our power to make it a little more bearable for Zachary and Meh. Check-in took ages, which I thought spelled disaster, but I told them our sad story and they recommended keeping the car seat available in case any seats were available at the gate (they thought a few might be). At the gate itself, they insisted that the plane was full and possibly even overbooked, but at the moment we boarded, the gate agent told us that there was an empty seat a few rows back and that we should ask the passengers there if they would trade. They graciously did, and Zachary got a seat to himself - woo hoo!
The change was dramatic; he was happy to sit in his spacious window seat, look out of the plane (saying 'da' to passing planes and cargo trucks), fell asleep pretty quickly into the flight, sleeping through much of it, and more or less happily playing through the remainder. We were really grateful to the ladies who switched with us, and tried to offer to pick up their plane food and/or drinks - they declined (perhaps wisely, based on the typical quality of plane food...)Hooray for being home! Zachary has been catching up on sleep in a serious way, doing 13 or even 14 hours a night. We're hopeful he'll be fully recharged for this weekend's Los Angeles trip, which is quite possibly his last of 2008.
